Making the background still
During the end of my test shoot I wondered if the images would look better if it was just the subject that was blurred and not the background so after I took the image with a long exposure, I stayed in the same place and took a photo of just the background by itself with a fast shutter speed so there was no movement caused by the wind.
I put the 2 images together on photoshop with the long exposure layer on the top.
I then used the eraser tool to erase around the blurry subject, revealing the still layer of leaves from the images below, I erased every part of the top layer other than the subject themselves and the subject blur.
I then changed the image to black and white just because my final images will be black and white.
My finished result was not as I hoped, I felt that there was too much contrast now between the blurred subject and the still background so I wasn't pleased but I still decided to try this again with another shoot.
I really do not like the effect editing like this gives, I think the difference between the soft blurred subject and the sharp background is too harsh. It also makes the background stand out more than the subject so takes away from the narrative.
I enjoyed this quick experiment but I will not be keeping editing the background to be still in my final images.
